Marc Gruber is adjunct professor for entrepreneurship and supervising the capstone project in the Rochester-Bern Executive MBA Program.

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[As chairman and CEO of IBM from 1993 to 2002, Lou Gerstner led the major turnaround that the company experienced during that time. &nbsp;In January 2003, he became chairman of The Carlyle Group, a global private equity firm located in Washington, DC. &nbsp;He retired from Carlyle in 2008 and remains a senior advisor to the firm. &nbsp;Prior to joining IBM, Gerstner served for four years as chairman and CEO of RJR Nabisco, Inc. &nbsp;This was preceded by an 11-year career at American Express Co., where he was president of the parent company and chairman and CEO of its largest subsidiary, American Express Travel Related Services Company. &nbsp;Prior to that, he was a director of the management consulting firm, McKinsey &amp; Co., Inc.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> Among his accomplishments at IBM, Lou Gerstner established &quot;Reinventing Education,&quot; a strategic partnership with 21 states and school districts which utilize IBM technology and provide technical assistance to eliminate key barriers to school reform and improve student performance. &nbsp;He is co-author of the book <i>Reinventing Education: Entrepreneurship in America's Public Schools</i> (Dutton 1994). &nbsp;In recognition of his efforts on behalf of public education, as well as his business accomplishments, Gerstner was awarded the designation of Knight Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in June 2001. &nbsp;He has served on the boards of Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., DaimlerChrysler, Sony Corporation, The New York Times Company, American Express Company, AT&amp;T, Caterpillar Inc., Jewel Companies, Melville Corporation, and RJR Nabisco Holdings Co., and on civic and philanthropic boards including The Broad Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the Council on Foreign Relations, The Business Council, and the America-China Forum.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> Given the University of Rochester’s recent partnership with IBM on the Blue Jean/Q Super Computer, it is a perfect time to honor Lou Gerstner for his distinguished career and his pivotal contributions to the field of information technologies.&nbsp; The Simon School looks forward to another groundbreaking conference in New York City next year.]]></content:encoded>
